The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle
The construction of a software system is an innovative endeavor, and an electronic information system is often a complex software system. (Allen McLean, 2015). Placing a complex software system into a healthcare system is rife with the possibility of failure. (Allen McLean, 2015). The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is the process of acquiring or upgrading an electronic information system that includes an initial investigation, systems analysis, iterations of design, system implementation, and ongoing maintenance. (Allen McLean, 2015). User involvement in the SDLC process is an accepted and preferred strategy when planning to install a new or upgraded information system. (Allen McLean, 2015).
The planning phase of SDLC defines the purpose of the software application. (Kumar, 2020). The team obtains a clear idea of creating software and builds boundaries keeping the project from shifting or extending from the original purpose. (Kumar, 2020). Nurse involvement in this phase is critical because nurses provide direct patient care and need user-friendly software that promotes continuity and decreases documentation redundancy. The consequences of not having nurses involved in the planning phase has software that does not meet the documentation needs of the facility, poor documentation, and software that is not properly used.
The design phase shows how the software works and significant aspects of the design of the software. (Kumar, 2020). It covers programming language, overall design, and use of templates and defines how nurses interact with the application and how it responds to their input. (Kumar, 2020). The lack of nurse involvement will lead to poor nurse satisfaction due to software that is not easily used and a program that is not easily understood. The software has to be manageable by all staff that uses it. In my opinion, the design phase is the most important phase because this is the phase that captures all the information that nurses chart.
The implementation phase begins when the intended group uses the software. (What Is The SDLC Life Cycle and Who Is Involved?, 2022). This phase is planned carefully as it involves turning off old systems while the new system is being introduced. (What Is The SDLC Life Cycle and Who Is Involved?, 2022). The consequences of not allowing nurses to participate in the implementation phase will result in complaints about the software, nurses not being on board with training, and staff not using the software to its full potential of documenting patient care. I was not involved in planning new health information technology (HIT). The organization purchased Point Click Care (PCC) software and educated the staff via webinars. The software was easy to learn but did not have specific assessments for the patients we serve. Some assessments are tailored toward acute admission, and some are for rehabilitation, and we use the same initial admission assessment for readmission. I believe that not being involved in the selection of new software hinders accurate information from being captured about patients. Not being involved in planning for new software causes the software to be underutilized. Our facility has used PCC for almost a year, and most of the assessments are not used, proving that nurse involvement is vital when initiating new software in order to capture the correct medical information about our patients. Having the correct patient information allows for proper evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
