DB 3- “Influential Forces in Society”
People are influenced by many things in many different ways, whether they are aware of it or not. The term “peer pressure” is commonly used when talking about teenagers and their friend groups, we encourage teens not to fall for “peer pressure.” However, the influences of other people don’t stop in the teenage years. There are many different influences in the world that can affect a person’s attitude or behavior. Some things include religion, politics, media, personal experiences, the way a person was raised, education, and the continued influence of friends and family.
This thread will focus on media as an influential force in our society today. Media has proven to be a giant force over the information people take in and influence their opinion. This can be seen in election years when “fake news” is being spread and digital arguments on complete opposite ends are a common occurrence. The content that people are being “fed” will always influence their behaviors, and with media constantly serving up content it is a prevalent force of influence in society (Havard, 2019).
What’s interesting is that media can influence attitudes positively or negatively, depending on the person receiving the information (Havard, 2019). This can be in part due to the fact that moral philosophies are individual and personal, so what one person sees presented by the media as right another person may see as wrong (Ferrel, 2022).
Research has shown that media does influence people’s attitudes (Gillig, 2018). In the last few years, more and more transgender people have been shown in the media on television (Gillig, 2018). Research has shown the development of more positive attitudes towards transgendered people, even from Conservatives, as a result of the increased exposure and seeing transgenders in a positive light (Gillig, 2018).
Biblically speaking we are told that many different things want our attention, but that only God deserves it. 1 Corinthians 12:1-2 says, “Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers, and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.” We are always being influenced by someone or something, but the important thing is to make sure our eyes are fixed on Jesus and He remains our biggest influencer.
