Carol Dweck’s “Brainology” discusses the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset. Jo Boaler’s “Why Struggle is Essential for the Brain” discusses the importance of a mindset that includes discovery and curiosity and explains the value of participating in a productive struggle. All three of the authors (Malcolm X, Victor Villasenor, or Mike Rose) exhibited these traits. In your essay, explain Dweck and/or Boaler’s theory using the author’s experience to prove the theory. You will answer the question:
How does (Malcolm or Victor or Mike) prove (growth mindset, the power of yet, or productive struggle)
Your essay should follow this outline:
Intro Paragraph:
Start by introducing Dweck or Boaler. For Dweck: Introduce “Brainology” and explain her theory of growth & fixed mindset OR introduce her Ted Talk and explain the power of yet For Boaler: Introduce “Why Struggle is Essential for the Brain” and explain the theory of productive struggle
The last sentence of your intro should be your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should include the author you are going to write about and what they exhibited through their own journey of learning.
For example:
Malcolm X exhibited a growth mindset when learning to read OR Mike Rose engaged in productive struggle while navigating high school.
Body Paragraphs:
Each body paragraph should focus on ONE main point and include a specific example, from the text, that proves it. (Please watch the video on TIED structure (in this module) to help you write a strong body paragraph.Note that the example in the video is a little different than the prompt for this essay).
Start with a topic sentence that announces what you are going to prove in the paragraph:
For example:
Villasenor had a growth mindset when attempting to get his book published.
Then introduce the evidence:
Villasenor was writing a book about…. and he sent it to a lot of publishers (set up the context for your reader so I understand the circumstance)
Next.. include a quote from the text that PROVES the topic sentence:
Proof = he received 265 rejections for his book, but he never gave up (find the quote in the text proving this). This will be one focused paragraph
Finally.. Discuss how this is proof
Receiving 265 rejections is proof of a growth mindset because…. (you can use Dweck’s language here too)
REPEAT
Each body paragraph should follow this structure. Your essay will include 2-3 examples from the text .. which means 2-3 body paragraphs and 2-3 quotes in the essay!
Conclusion:
Restate your thesis, and then provide your reader with a “so what?” What does this teach the reader? What do I learn from these examples?? What is the bigger message.
I encourage you to read and watch all the material under “Before you Write” on the next few pages before actually writing your essay! You should also submit a draft to Katie (our tutor), the Writing Center, or me before uploading your final.
GENERAL reminders for ALL essays:
Your intro will include a thesis statement that answers the prompt and tells me what is going to be in your paper!
Body paragraphs will be organized with clear topic sentences (see TIED structure in this module)
Specific evidence from the text must support your claims (you must include quotes)
Effective use of transitional words and phrases should connect paragraphs and sentences
An effective conclusion which reinforces the thesis and points to a larger significance of the essay’s point will be present (answer the “so what?”)
You should have clear, complete sentences with no sentence-level errors that distract the reader or distort the meaning.
Include a unique title
Write it in MLA format (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins)
Include a Works Cited page (there is an example in this module). It doesn’t have to be prefect, but try!
