Cultural Literature Review Directions
This assignment is a review of the literature to learn more about a culturally diverse group. For this assignment, locate at least 15 peerreviewed articles (the most recent research is preferred, anything prior to 2012 is not accepted). from the library database and/or from
high-quality, research-based websites that identify certain cultural beliefs, practices, and subsequent effects on the learning and
development of young children (ages birth through 8) for a chosen culturally diverse group. You want to think about how specific cultural
practices impact what we do as teachers and administrators in programs for young children. If research confirms that talking to a child,
reading to a child at an early age, singing songs, etc. all promote cognitive and language development, then we would obviously want to
do that in our classrooms, and we hope that our parents would also engage in frequent and quality language and interactions with the
child. Knowing this, what are the applications for your program or for a program serving young children? What kinds of parent
information sessions, or programs sessions can be provided? How can we help parents who speak a primary language in the home that is
different from the one spoken at school to provide the best linguistic environment for the child? This is basically what the assignment
asks you to do. Research and read about culture and the impact of culture on development of the child in one or more developmental
domains. In addition, you will describe how we can implement practices and procedures to show respect for cultural beliefs and develop
and implement programs that respond to these beliefs and/or needs. Focus on the application of practices which are responsive to
cultural values, needs and beliefs in this assignment.
You will submit the assignment and post it on a discussion board so others can learn from what you have researched and so that you can
learn from others. You will then comment on your classmates’ posts and add to the discussion regarding this assignment.
Cultural Literature Review Writing Steps
Section 1: Literature Review Research
a. Background Information of the Cultural Group. Choose a culturally diverse group to research. It may be based on
ethnicity, race, language, and/or cultural characteristics (African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, low SES, children
being raised by same sex parents, active-duty military families, etc.). Define the group chosen and also identify subgroups
within the group (for example, Hispanic includes Mexican-American, Cuban-American, Puerto Rican, etc.). Give
background information, characteristics, traits, etc. Remember, culture refers to a system of shared customs and
meanings that allow individuals to participate as members of a group and that are transmitted from one generation to the
next (Cook & Cook, 516). Read more about culture throughout your textbook as it integrates it into each chapter.
b. Influences on Development within the Cultural Group. Write a review based on your research, which describes
what is known about the context of the lives of the children in the identified group, how children in this group learn and
achieve in school, with an emphasis on preschool and primary grade learning and performance. For example, are there
behavioral, health, cultural, motivational, language, etc. strengths and/or concerns identified in the literature that seem to
generally impact the development, learning and achievement of children from this group? (We will recognize that when
dealing with research, we are dealing with the group and generalities and not individual children.) Does research indicate
strengths, concerns and/or needs specific to this group for involving families effectively? For the cultural group you have
chosen, include accurate, specific examples of a range of influences on children’s development (such as health, individual
characteristics, family context, community characteristics, etc.) impacting children across two or more age groups, from
birth through age 8.
Section 2: A Plan of Appropriate Teaching and Learning Strategies for the Cultural Group
Develop a plan of appropriate teaching and learning strategies for a child or children in your chosen cultural group to share with parents.
Based on the information and findings presented in the literature review, make recommendations for the research-based practices that
will best support the learning and achievement of children of this group in preschool/primary grade settings (impacting children across
two or more age groups, from birth through age 8). Essentially, apply to classroom/school-based settings the information presented in
the review above. Connect your applications to the literature findings (so each application/recommendation made should be based in a
research finding – there should not be a recommendation for practice that does not somehow connect to a research finding of your
cultural group; the recommendations themselves do not have to be directly you’re your research but must reflect your knowledge of the
research. Your plan should include and identify a variety of approaches and strategies to:
• Foster oral language and communication in the home and classroom. Link the child’s language and culture to the ECE
classroom/program and what you specifically will do.
• Modify or make changes in the indoor and outdoor environment, daily schedule, daily routines to address unique
needs of the child in cultural group selected.
• Explain the manner in which you will guide social interactions and play of children to develop positive or pro-social
behaviors.
• Make suggestions for any challenging behaviors, which might hinder the child’s development as it relates to ethnicity,
culture and language.
Section 3: Personal Reflection
Provide your personal opinion/reflection of your research findings based on your personal beliefs and experiences in early childhood
education. How has your research impacted you and how may it positively impact the children you work with/are responsible for in your
early childhood setting?
Section 4: References
