Each unit
contains six lectures. Each lecture includes
one mandatory map selection from History of the World: Map by Map, which
are the basis of writing assignments called “map essays.” Each essay is based on one map from each
lecture.
Each map
essay should fully describe the map, the companion text, and place it in
historical context. Do not reiterate my
lecture. You must incorporate the
information from the map book. The
second half of the essay is your personal appraisal of the map. For example, does
viewing the map and reading the text clear up any misunderstandings you
previously held? Does it reinforce any prior
knowledge? Is any important information
missing? Is the map clear or a bit
ambiguous? Do not cut and paste these
essay prompts into the essay. This is not an exhaustive list of themes that
students might address. For example, if
the document does not clear up any previous misconceptions or
misunderstandings, do not write: “the document does not clear up any previous
misconceptions or misunderstandings.”
Also, do not merely say that the map “is important.” Of course, it is important, or it would not
be in the collection. You need to state
why it is important.
Submit each
set of six individual map essays as one MS Word document [not six individual
submissions] in Dropbox. Each of these two
submissions is worth 25 percent of the final grade. Each individual map essay must
be a minimum of 300 words. There is no
maximum word count. Thus, each unit
submission should be no less than 1,800 words.
Excellent essays [interesting and informative; competent coverage;
written in proper English] earn an A
