Film-based Ethnography Observation Project
For the film-based ethnographic observation project, select an appropriate film (either
documentary or general cinematic release film) and describe the culture and their behaviors as
demonstrated in the film with respect to the concepts that we are learning about in the class.
As part of your write up you will need to clearly name and connect at least five vocabulary
terms that we have covered to the observed behaviors. These terms can be from any chapter or
portion of the class and can be either from the same chapter or from different chapters. Make
sure that the terms are clearly identified by bolding them in your text.
In selecting the film, you will need to be mindful and deliberate about the culture(s) or
subculture(s) represented in the film. This should be a culture or subculture that you are not
generally familiar with and it should be a central component of the film.
Appropriate films include ethnographic documentaries that you can find on streaming services
or through our library film databases such as “Films on Demand” and “Kanopy”, or mainstream
films that directly describe either real or imagined cultures such as “Bend it Like Beckham” or
“Avatar”. It is up to you to find an appropriate film. If you pick a film to use and while writing up
your paper, you realize that you have insufficient material to use from the film, you will need to
start over.
Your paper will be 4-6 pages long and will clearly identify the film, the director and the year it
was made and also where you found it. You will also provide a brief synopsis of the film. The
majority of the paper will focus on the analysis of the culture and behaviors observed in the
film and their relation to the class content. An important part of ethnographic fieldwork (which
this project is meant to simulate) is learning how to take appropriate and meaningful notes, so
you will also be expected to submit your fieldnotes with the paper. The paper will be due as
identified on the syllabus schedule.
Your paper will be assessed on the following criteria:
– Meeting the page length parameters
– Identification of the film, director, year and source where you viewed it
– Clear synopsis of film
– Effective analysis of the behaviors presented in the film
– Identification of the five (minimum) vocabulary terms and correct usage of the terms
in the analysis of the culture
– Proper spelling and use of grammar
– Presence of your fieldnotes
