In summary, THINK OF POLITICAL CULTURE, how it evolves, this way:
step 1: culture = why/how we do things here: food, music, dress, tradition, family norms, etc.
step 2: political culture = how we “do political things” here: government structure, priorities in law & policy, election styles, etc.
step 3: differences, or clash of political culture – based on competing priorities (public goods vs. private goods OR new ways vs. old ways) Culture explains WHY residents of a particular place prefer, want or reject policies put forth by government, or the manner in which government behaves.
Next, think SUBCULTURES—the component parts of the culture– often referred to as 1. traditionalistic, 2. individualistic, 3. moralistic….These are PATTERNS within the political culture of Texas–all three are visible in certain issues, decisions, elections, etc.
FOR ASSIGNMENT: Please click on “The Vital Role of Political Culture” and read. Read often and repeat 😉 Next, submit a comparative summary of the 3 subcultures, addressing the following questions: (Note: comparative indicates that you address each of the subcultures, for 1-3 below. It’s more productive to address each question, list the 3 different subcultures, then move on to the next question. Example: The core idea of moralistic is ___, for Traditionalist it is ___, and Individualist core idea is ___.)
2-3 sentences for each question
1. What is the core idea/premise of each subculture?
2. How do they differ about bureaucracy and political parties/ideology
3. Which is each subculture focused on, private society, or the public community?
For the Second page:
Based on the reading “The Vital Role of Political Culture” please comment on how the article reflects Traditionalism–also, hunting is just one aspect of traditionalism, can you spot others in the article?
The article depicts moralistic subculture in response to public safety–comment on how it fits the description of Moralistic
Individualistic subculture is depicted in _______ comment on what you perceive is individualistic. Note: having the right to bear arms isn’t an example of individualistic.
For the Third page:
Your job is to apply the concepts–that is, political subcultures–to Current Events articles. You need to search the Texas Tribune, Austin Statesman, Dallas Morning News, etc. Please choose 1 article for each subculture, from any article about Texas government/political/social events….For the assignment, you need to list the primary political subculture reflected in each news story, and why….thats the good part! You should read over The Vital Role of Political Culture before doing this part.
Remember that the article needs to be about Texas state and/or local items–the situation may involve the national government; ie, protests from immigrant groups, funding for drought relief, Federal Court rulings about abortion, etc, but the subcultural pattern should apply to the actions of state & local entities.
You can also point out a second subculture, if you perceive one, in your responses. In summary you’ll have 3 listings, one for each article, with an explanation of how the subculture is part of the story. This Sample Article (Links to an external site.) (only for example, but it is interesting!) reflects both Moralistic and Traditionalistic. Moralistic, because bankruptcy and fraud/abuse are very costly, tightly regulated areas of criminal and civil law, thus the actions of NY state government. To better avoid punishment, the NRA planned to move its financial headquarters to Texas…after reading the article, you should be able to spot the traditionalistic elements.
In summary, you need to 1. choose three articles total, 2. post the portions that reflect the subculture, or the whole article if just 2-3 paragraphs. 3. type a brief statement about which subculture(s) the article most reflects.
