For this essay, you will use your annotated bibliography work (and likely some additional research) to write an article for a national publication in which you take an arguable stance on a specific problem or issue. For example, maybe there is a need for consensus that the problem must be addressed or a solution for which you can advocate. Your genre is a magazine article, and you must select a specific publication to write for that is appropriate for your topic/argument and contains some in-depth researched articles. Your audience is the readers of that magazine—and you’ll need to think about how to appeal to those specific readers and engage them in this issue. Your main purpose as a writer is to make a nuanced, complex argument that adheres to the genre features of this magazine.
While the genre features of your magazine will shape your essay, good general rules are to state your thesis early, so your reader knows what’s at stake, and to use narrative or personal experience sparingly. Your article should focus on your argument and evidence. Whatever writing choices you make, your article must be genre- and audience-aware, cohesive, and stylistically consistent. Your article must effectively use research to make a nuanced argument and respond to your reader’s possible questions, concerns, or objections. (Note: If you can’t anticipate your audience having specific objections or concerns, you have not selected an appropriate magazine for your argument.) This is NOT an “all about” essay. Your readers don’t want to know everything about the issue—only what’s relevant to them and the specific argument you’re making. If, for instance, your audience already accepts that this issue is a problem, your article could focus on proposing a solution.
Your magazine selection may influence your article’s length, but aim for ~1,500 words. Research Requirements:
You must use at least five in-depth credible sources that cover various perspectives on the issue and that are appropriate for your magazine. Cite your research using the genre norms of your publication; most likely this will be a mix of signal phrases and hyperlinks, but some publications might use footnotes or other documentation approaches.
