General Instructions For Writing Your Research Proposal
You will be writing a research proposal for this class, you are NOT conducting actual research. The document you write for this class can be used in the future for a research paper. The majority of students that continue to a 4-year school will have to author a research paper in order to earn their undergraduate degree. Therefore, by design, this proposal will travel with you and give you a head start on that process.
You must choose from one of the topics that I have selected for you. Each topic will include a proper research question that informs that topic.
Your proposal must follow the proposal outline that I’ve provided and include the major sections of a research proposal: Introduction, Literature Review, Methods, and References. Sub-sections, as described in the proposal outline are optional based on the type of proposal you decide to write (this will be discussed at length in lecture).
Your proposal must strictly adhere to APA 7th formatting. I’ve provided an example document (Links to an external site.).
You must submit the rough draft assignment through Turnitin. This assignment is for your benefit so that you can see what your similarity score is. This score should be under 13%. If higher, the paper could be flagged for plagiarism. You can submit multiple times. This is a pass/fail full credit assignment. There is no reason why any student should not submit a rough draft.
Once you have submitted your rough draft and your proposal is complete, you will submit your final draft through Turnitin as well. The final draft proposal will be graded with a rubric which is available for your review.

Introduction – REQUIRED SECTION – LEVEL 1 HEADING
The introduction should be engaging, and orient the reader to the larger topic(s) and issue(s) to be addressed in the proposal
Opening two paragraphs can introduce the research question, why is it interesting? Give some examples.
What is the rationale for conducting the study?
How does the topic impact society?
Is there a major theory that informs the topic?
Should open with a description of the topic, a description of the type of behavior the study will examine, and why is it important?
Should provide background on the topic, should demonstrate knowledge of the topic, and discuss gaps in knowledge or research.
Should close with your research question
Tip – Read the opening paragraphs of your various sources to see how they set up issues and orient the reader
Tip – Very broadly, most introductions are comprised of three components: background information, justification for doing the study, and hypothesis or description of the purpose and objectives of the study
APA 7th: Level 2 Headings – SUGGESTIONS ONLY, NOT REQUIRED
Background – discusses in depth about the topic, whereas the introduction only gives an overview.
Statement of Problem – refers to the critical issue that your research seeks to address
Purpose of Research – to find out what is known, what is not, and what can be developed further
Significance of Research – a justification of the importance of the proposed research and how it impacts the field
Assumptions – what are the unverified facts presumed by the researcher to be true
Limitations – what are the flaws or shortcomings of the proposal
Hypothesis – a proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation
Definition of Terms – provide reader clarity of the concepts or factors that will be discussed throughout your proposal
Literature Review (need academic 8 sources) – REQUIRED SECTION – LEVEL 1 HEADING
The literature review should be a new section with subtitles, to signal a more in-depth discussion of issues. Does not start on a new page
Organize around specific points, not different pieces of research – create analytical slices (each slice would be a level 2 heading)
Peer-reviewed sources
In-text citations
Know your topic
Link to theoretical framework and theory
Paraphrase, how do these sources inform your topic
Acceptable to academically criticize previous studies Methods – REQUIRED SECTION – LEVEL 1 HEADING
The methods section should be a new section – does not start on a new page
Describe how you will conduct this research in detail, be very specific
What type of study? Observational, quantitative, experimental, case study?
Will the study generalize to a broader population?
What are your variables? How will they be measured?
Have you considered construct validity? Will you use an established scale or survey?
What about study participants, demographics, how many, how will you recruit them, and will they be compensated?
Where will the study occur? How much time will you dedicate to the data collection process?
Your role as observer, interviewer, will notes be taken, interview/survey?
How will you code/organize data/observations?
What type of analysis will be conducted? Do you have a statistical hypothesis?
Do the methods described propose a method of research that answers your research question?
