In this project we will survey all of the members of this class about our social identities, attitudes on social issues, preferences, and habits. Each of you will contribute at least one question to the survey, and we will all respond to the survey when it is available.
Each student will develop a scientific question that can be answered with the survey data, conduct a short literature review related to the question, and use a statistical procedure to analyze the results of the survey and provide an argument about whether our survey helps us answer the research question.
This project is due in distinct phases (that are each collected under different assignments in Canvas)
Write an essay in which you bring together your previous assignments to present your research question and make an argument about whether the survey data supports your position.
While you may consult with your fellow classmates, each person must write up their own results and submit a unique project (projects will be checked for plagiarism with Turnitin)
The project must include:
a research question and a hypothesis
clearly identify your dependent variable and at least one independent variable
a short literature review with at least 3 sources supporting your research question (this short literature review should be less than a page in length and should briefly summarize the main argument from your sources in your own words). A great place to find academic sources is here Sociological Abstract database, available from the library (Links to an external site.). (Links to an external site.)
a discussion of the method we used (survey research) and relevant survey questions
description of who took the survey (demographic summary)
a discussion of the survey items (questions) chosen for analysis in your project
a univariate (one variable) and a bivariate (two variables) analysis
at least one chart or graph visually representing the data for a variable of interest
at least one table showing a cross-tabulation between two variables (must include both frequencies and percentages)
an analysis of whether the survey results confirm the hypothesis
a discussion of the limitations of this data as it pertains to your research question
define the terms validity and reliability as it relates to the survey questions and give an example of how we might question either validity or reliability in at least one question you have chosen
a properly formatted work cited page
The project must be clearly organized and professionally presented
