Hey class,
I chose option 2 for this week’s discussion.
After viewing the graph, our priorities change as we get older. Certain things that we used to care about doesn’t really matter that much anymore. The older we get, the more responsibilities we have, and we find ways to conform and adjust to those responsibilities. We start to lose focus on things that don’t really amount to us much longer and start focusing on the things that do. They older we become, the more we have to lose. From ages 25-34, people invested more time into work, friends, family, and independence compared to someone in the ages 35-65, whereas family became more important than friends (Santrock 2019). From viewing this graph, having coworkers of all ages, and meeting people of different ages, it’s so many things that older generations can teach younger generations. Older generations have seen and done it all and have been through many life lessons that we could all use. Figuring out life and how to coexist with the many challenges it brings isn’t always so easy trying to figure it out on your own.
Older adults have a higher level of conscientiousness, higher level of openness, longitudinal prospective on life, more mature in relationships, more security, more stability, growth, insight, clarity, compassion, etc (Becker 2017). The wisdom that older adults can spread upon younger adults can help save a lifetime of regret and mistakes. The advice older generations give younger generations allow us to understand the bigger picture, broaden perspectives, and learn how to be more proactive of situations we can’t control. For example, “in order to achieve peace, you have to eliminate all the hate in your heart. Peace leads to happiness” (Lill 2020). For so long we have been told to listen to our elders and I can honestly say not one bit of their advice ever steered me wrong. The most valuable piece of information I ever received was understanding the importance of life. The best tip to that was “save your money, organize your life, set a goal, and learn how to love”.
