You are employed by a North American car leasing company LeasePlan as a training manager. A division of your company called LeasePlan Belgium has called your Department saying it is identifying employees training needs and that they need to work more efficiently. Your supervisor has asked you to help with the problem in the Belgian branch. However, due to the current travel restrictions you are unable to visit them but have had consultations over the phone with the Belgium HR Manager who raised this issue.

Due to the higher costs of new cars the auto leasing industry has exploded in popularity in the past few years yet many consumers still don’t have a complete understanding of how auto leasing works or whether or not it is right for them. After further discussion with The HR Manager she suggested that what was required was a new Induction program as the revenues were flat over the last year, costs of sales were increasing. She felt that one of the key issues was new employees’ ability to understand the complexities of the industry. She also stated that in the past employee survey that engagement was falling, and she felt that this may be a result of employees’ lack of comfort in the role.
You are aware that the local staff have extensive HR experience but lack experience in TNA, so at the end of the conversation, because you are unable to visit and direct the process you have agreed to product a short guide on “Completing a Training Needs Analysis” in order to assist the Belgium staff in completing this exercise.
In your brief conversation you are aware that the HR Manager is jumping to several conclusions regarding the causes of the problems, and you are aware that she has a lot of pressure to obtain results quickly. Your guide therefor will not simply outline the steps in the process but will also be a guide to avoid some of the traps and difficulties in completing this process. You want to produce a handbook (manual) that will not only be a step-by-step guide but also include the reasons why each step is necessary and alert the people who are completing the needs analysis to some of the pitfall e.g., identification of non- training issues and ensuring effective data collection rather than relying on job descriptions etc.
