M7: First Draft Start Assignment
Thesis Statement–this is the main argument of your paper
Problem Analysis–this section sets up your entire paper, so you must include it as either an Assessment of Current Efforts or a Problem Statement.
Minimum of 4-5 Pages–you may include whichever additional sections you would like. We will cover introductions and conclusions in the next module, so you may want to wait on those, but it’s up to you. I encourage you to include complete sections for whatever you are turning in, perhaps your Problem Analysis and your Solutions. If you turn in an incomplete section, please leave a note explaining what’s still to come in that section and any question you may have.
Minimum of 3-4 Sources–these should be cited in-text and in your Works Cited/References page
Developing a First Draft
This week your primary task is to begin drafting your essay. This process can begin before you get feedback on your outline, but be sure to be checking the gradebook so you can integrate feedback as soon as you have it. Your Requirements
By the end of this module you will have drafted half or more of your paper. Content:
Revised thesis–use feedback from previous modules
Complete Problem Analysis–this section sets up your entire paper, so you must include it as either an Assessment of Current Efforts or a Problem Statement.

This is a first draft, but think of it as a partial draft instead of a crappy draft. Choose which sections you want to work on and do your best work. You’ll get better feedback if you are turning in work you are proud of than if you are turning in work you already know is full of problems (especially if they’re problems you already could have fixed yourself.)
If set up your outline carefully, it will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. It should provide a strong path as you begin the writing process and should keep you from having to go back and forth from your notes to your paper, but a research paper, and proposals in particular, are not just a listing of arguments and facts. The arguments require you to craft them, to give them life and voice. Each section of the paper comes with its own particular challenges, so a big part of this unit is about understanding how to make sure that your ideas, your research, and your visuals all come together as a single argument instead of as disconnected pieces.
