Question 2 (Chapter 16)
Look at the map on p. 607 (print version) in your text and read the section “The Transformation of the West” in Chapter 16 of Foner, Eric. “Give Me Liberty: An American History.” Seagull ed. 6th ed. Vol. 2. Your discussion assignment is to write a news article through the eyes of a newspaper reporter who is traveling from through the West by railroad in the 1870s. In your article, describe life as you witness it. You MUST include a discussion of Native Americans, the geographical diversity of the region, farming, cowboys and the cattle industry, and ethnic groups such as the Chinese (but there were a variety of ethnic groups who settled West of the Mississippi River). End with the conclusion that the West is not what a lot of Americans from the East Coast imagined it to be–that it is diverse, economically thriving, has diverse ethnic groups, etc. In other words, you’re telling the reality of the West. Be sure to include any inequities, injustices, prejudices that you observe and that you have read about in Ch. 16! It MUST be written like a newspaper article or you will lose 10 points for not following directions. ALL of your information MUST come from Ch. 16 in your text. Absolutely NO outside source may be used. Include NO information unless it is found on those pages in your text. Please remember this: This discussion is not a knock-off assignment. You must have details and specifics from the chapter.
