Aristotle’s book The Nicomachean Ethics is the first systematic work specifically on the nature of ethics, and is a classic in this regard. It seeks to understand what the good life is by first understanding what good is. the fact is, though, that unless one knows the nature of the thing one is trying to judge, judgements are impossible. That is, without an understanding of human nature, there is really no criteria to know whether a person is good or bad. Ultimately, to Aristotle, ethics is about developing characteristics (virtues) to facilitate a “better” life – and this is the idea that unfolds in the book.
