Individual Performance
Individual pay for performance refers to a company that pay employees based on how they perform their job. In 2021, IKEA raised their starting wages to $16/hour, with some starting at $17 or $18 depending on location. Their average wage is no $20/hour because of the increase in starting wages. The company also enhanced the benefits package, which now includes five weeks of paid time off, education assistance, back up child and adult care, and more inclusive health care benefits. Most employees also recieved a bonus they titles, “One IKEA bonus”, which is a performance based payout. The entire company paid $76 million for the bonus. IKEA has over 17,000 employees in the United States. The company contintues to invest in their employees, which will help lower turnover rates, burnout, or even conflict in individual stores. As a whole, IKEA had a 25% increase in sales in 2021 compared to 2020. (IKEA)
Individual incentive plans can offer larger payouts that increase as an employee’s performance increases, however there is a risk of not recieving a payout if the desdired perfromance is not reached. (Milkovich) Expectancy theory predicts that employee motivation and desired performance will increase if employees understand the plan performance goals and view them as ‘doable’, there is a clear link between performance and pay increases that is consistently communicated and followed through, and employees value and view the pay increases with a plan as meaningful.
