It is no surprise that many individuals are competitive and are driven when given rewards. In fact, the Harvard Business Review notes that about eighty one percent of top performing companies today use some form of individual pay for performance strategies (Low, 2016). This is because employees or individuals who are rewarded for doing well, in many cases making the most money, further benefits the employer. There have been several studies that reveal how these types of performance techniques really pay off. One of the largest businesses in the country with the most employees is Amazon, and they recently introduced a new pay system for their employees. More specifically, Amazon received significant criticism for their neglectful employment treatment as well as their quick turnaround time. However, Amazon has made strides to change that as they doubled their base pay cap for corporate staff as well as bettering their compensation packages. The company realized after much backlash that there was not enough incentive for employees to stay in the company long term. In fact, it is recorded that more than fifty vice presidents left the company last year (Miller, 2022). As of now, Amazon’s results with this package are too soon to tell, but their goal is to keep more promising and loyal employees who enjoy their job more than before. With an individual pay for performance method, oftentimes encourages employees to stay longer, give better customer service and much more (Koss, 2020). Certainly, incentives like these are great, but as Christians we are specifically instructed on what our work should look like. Colossian 3:23 reads, “whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men,” meaning that regardless of the reward or the incentive, we should give our best effort always because we work for the Lord and give Glory to him.
