Research Essay Directions
For your essay, you will write an analysis essay with a research component centered on a music video of your choice. The music video can be from any era and in any genre. Your essay needs to have a standard academic introduction and conclusion, and your essay needs to have three parts—lyrics, music, and images. The header for each section needs to be left aligned and in bold, with the section beginning at the next line underneath. Each section needs to contain at least one outside source within it, and you are allowed to use the same source for multiple sections. Keep in mind that your analysis needs to be backed by specific evidence found in the lyrics, video, and music, and that you need to support your thesis statement throughout your essay by producing interesting topic sentences and well-rounded body paragraphs.
Here are some questions to prompt ideas for each section—
Lyrics: What do the words of the song convey and how are they related to the theme(s)? Is there a certain story within the song that can be elaborated on? Are there specific word choices that prompt an emotion or idea?
Music: What does the singer’s voice sound like? Are there certain times where the music is louder than others? What instruments are prominent throughout? What tone is conveyed through the music (happy, sad, playful, gloomy, dreamy, etc.) and why is this important?
Images: How do the chosen images in the video relate to the ideas presented in the song itself? What aspects of cinematography are prevalent in the video and why are those aspects important? What symbols are in the video and how does the artist interact in the video itself?
Format your essay using standard MLA formatting. Please check your margins, spacing, page numbers, font, etc. Along with formatting, the paper needs to follow standard conventions in an academic essay, such as introduction paragraph, a thesis statement, topic sentences, etc. This essay needs to be a minimum of 1,400 words, and it must not exceed 2,000 words. It must contain a Works Cited page with a citation for the music video itself along with at least three outside sources. These secondary sources can include research regarding music video itself, historical context regarding the music genre or artist, wardrobe and costuming, symbolism, lyrical inspirations, interviews, or any other aspect of the video itself that you feel is necessary to discuss.
You will be handing this in through Canvas in the Assignments portal. The essay needs to be submitted as a Word document or PDF only. The document needs to be able to be opened. Before submitting, ensure that the file itself not corrupt or problematic in any way, as these cannot be accepted.
