Research Paper Guidelines
Length: 8+ full pages (2400 + words), 12 font, double-spaced, in MLA format with a Works Cited (MLA) page (Works Cited not included in page count). All essays must have titles. Your essay should reflect careful research, thinking, and writing about your topic.
Topic: Your choice. Topic must be approved based on your research proposal.
The final paper must contain a minimum of seven sources, at least two of which must be peer reviewed journals or “feature-length” treatments of your subject in a professional/educational journal or high-level news source. Internet material must be from a viable source (academic/research institutions, professional organizations, legitimate online news sources, and government sources encouraged). Articles from the popular press (newspapers and news magazines) are acceptable, but these should be articles of substantial length and depth.
Your goal in this paper should be to state and support an argument resulting from a careful examination of evidence from experts writing about your chosen topic.
You will begin by formulating a good research question that is interesting and fresh. You should briefly examine how perspectives on your issue have changed over time and why. The final research paper must accomplish one of the following:
1. Defend your position on the topic of debate or
2. Propose a solution to a significant problem or
3. Explore an under-researched topic and draw tentative conclusions based on what research there is.
The final paper represents your turn on stage, your opportunity to demonstrate what you’ve learned about your subject through your argument or proposal. Merely presenting information you’ve found will not be sufficient; you must apply the information to an argument.
The final paper must have a clearly stated thesis in a clear introduction. Supporting paragraphs are to be organized around your conclusions after having done this research, NOT simply around sources and quotations. When you introduce sources, remember to introduce the people and their credentials wherever appropriate.
You are not a sponge, but a writer who is critically investigating a subject of interest. The paper can and should be interesting for anyone to read (your target audience is anyone reading at the college level).
Due: Wednesday, July 6th at midnight
***Note, I have already provided the sources in an MLA format. All that is left to do is write the essay in the “research paper and structures and sample” format I have provided below. That is the way my professor wants it done. I will also need a thesis to be sent to me as soon as possible before the essay is written.***
